Why are my EndNote citations suddenly appearing in curly brackets?

If you're working on a document and using EndNote to Cite While You Write, you may have inadvertently unformatted your in-text citations, or turned off the instant formatting preference, with the result that your in-text citations now appear something like this - {Jones, 1967 #14}, where Jones = author; 1967 = year; and #14 = the EndNote record number.

To turn instant formatting on again, click the bottom corner arrow on the Bibliography group of the EndNote X4 tab in Word...


...then select the Instant Formatting tab, click Turn On, and then click OK:
